Research
Below
is all my research I have done to look in depth at my final idea. This research
looks further into my demographic, the genre and the understanding of how to
create and host a video such as the 1 I aim to make in this project. In this I
discovered what will make my video a success and how to correctly design it to
my audience. I start looking at the basics of learning what a multi-camera
project is and how to create its signature genre styles, them moving on to my
own primary and secondary research where I investigate and discover the attributes
I would then use in the making of my final video.

Team Comment:
When researching multi camera production for our power-point presentation, as a team we learnt a lot about the major differences between a single and multi camera shoot and how they are able to film these, such as finding out how many cameras are necessary for the shoots. We also discovered the advantages and disadvantages of filming a live event and a studio production. Another subject we were educated on was why certain decisions; lighting, sound, editing etc, are made as they serve as an advantage by working around the limitation of a multi-camera show. Working as a team has helped us understand how much research is necessary during this unit.

I will be shooting my project 10th October 2018, this will shot at my own address. I will be using three Panasonic cameras to shoot with so I can get footage at different angles. One will have a wide shot of both people featured on my show as well two cameras each having a mid shot of each character on my show so I can change between the 3 shots when I edit my project together, my cameras will be stationary as I want my camera to fit in with the style of a podcast or chat show. To help me with the audio will bringing along 2 extra mins to gain better audio quality that I will be adding into my video during post editing. my location will be based in my living room as it fits the theme and style I am aiming to make with my show. There is a fear if space issues but I will be doing a test with tripods before the shoot to check for space issues to find a suitable solution if one happens to appear. I will be applying what we learn in lessons to what I make by using a TC setting and using what I shot in my test as an idea for what I make by learning from the flaws that have been displayed in that test such as placement issues and communication between me, the director, and my actors who will be featured on shoot. My time-code will be set at zero on all three cameras to sync them all together for shoot.
We practiced setting up a camera and using the white balance correctly by setting it up in a classroom under one set of lighting and setting on up outside with a different lighting set and then comparing the difference in how they looked. This is to remind us to always adjust the white balance on set when the lighting changes to make sure the picture quality always comes out well so the footage requires less work in editing to make it appealing to the eye on the screen. On my location for my shoot I will have to remember to adjust the lighting on my set as I will be using a combination of natural and studio lighting on my set. If I do not fix the white balance to suit this my footage will be compromised which could result in the need of a retake or more editing time in an attempt to fix what I can with the footage I have.

Do you watch chat shows on TV or online? Online
Would yo be more likely to watch a chat show online? Yes
What theme of chat shows do you watch? Eg, Comedy, celebrity news, gossip. Mostly comedy.
Why do you watch chat shows? For entertainment purposes, to relax.
Reliability - if a question is repeatable and when asked can come back with the same answers from different people, it is then reliable.

An example of reliable data is a blood test because you can go through multiple in your life and always have the same result due to the fact it never changes.
Internal Validity - show a person an image of someone being murdered. Rate upsetting.
External Validity - Applies to people beyond questionnaire (examination).
My Research - Primary
Survey
For my primary research I have decided to conduct a survey
and interview. This would give me a more definite understanding on my demographic
and what they want. In this survey all my participants fell into the age category
of my target audience, however, in order to focus more on my main demographic I
will only be using the responses from the male respondents to my survey. They do
make up the majority of my survey with there being 5 males and 2 females. But as
they are my main target audience it feel only right to use their answers compared
to the rest of the questions to understand if they want what I aim to make.
Looking at these responses we can see that my show would be
watched as most males said they watch chat shows for about 2 – 3 hours a week
and others saying more. This means my show would be watched by my target audience
and would not be overlooked or ignored. I also feel confident the show itself
would be of interest to my demographic as the majority of participants said
comedy was their favorite genre of chat show to watch. Some people stated they
enjoy celebrity news but this still works well into my project as my show would
in theory feature celebrity guest stars on every week, much like show such as
Room 101, Would I Lie to You and 8 Out Of 10 Cats. Using what this information
has provided me with I can feel more confident moving on with my main video as I
now have confirmed evidence that my video would be watched and enjoyed by my demographic.
These
questions were asked so I could find out more about what my demographic think
of chat shows and if they would consider watching my chat show on the platform
it would be designed to feature on. In this case, my show would be hosted
online via a streaming site such as YouTube or twitch. Looking at my respondents
most people say they prefer to watch chat shows online rather than on the TV. This
may have something to do with the fact that in the modern day and age students
can go online and watch whatever show they desire when they want as oppose to
waiting and watching it on TV when it happens to be on. This is part of the
reason I want my show to be shown online, as it would be more likely to be seen
and watched by my demographic. Next I asked them if they would be more likely
to watch a show if it were to be shown online, they all said yes, this further
confirms my theory that more people would rather watch a show when it’s convenient
for them rather than waiting and building their schedule around when a show is
due to be aired.
After looking at all the information I have collected in
this survey, I have helped validate and proof my Geo-demographic further from
what can be seen in the ideas section of this blog. From this I can use the
information said here to help plan and organised my main video taking into
account where it would be shown as well as what genres will be represented and
how long it should run for to keep a running audience engaged and interested for
regular shows. Next, will hosting an interview with 2 people from my demographic
as that will give me further insight into what my target audience want to watch
and will give me the opportunity to know what they would want to see in a chat
show such as the one I aim to make. Doing this will help me in the planning and
organizing of my project to reassure I add in as many thing as I can would help
encourage people to watch and enjoy my show.
Interview
After hosting this interview I have gained a better
understanding on what my demographic think of my show idea and what I can do to
make it a good viewing experience for those who watch. From here I will be
looking at my questions in more detail and analysing them to gain an
understanding on what I need to do when planning the production of my video.
When I asked my target audience what they thought of my idea
concept, both participants agreed they like my idea as they enjoy the show Room
101, however, one participant did say they would enjoy the show but would
rather watch it in the evening when they have more time to do so, or for it to
be online so they can watch it when they’re free to watch it at their own
leisure.
I also asked what the target audience would like to see in
the set and design of my video; a common theme was the idea of using a simple
homey set that felt natural and comfortable. One of my interviewees said they
would also like to see limited bright colours as to avoid seeing a set that looks
too artificial and overdone. To help meet these preferences I will be looking
into using a set made with homey attributes such as couches, warm wooden based
colours and with minimal décor to set the shows theme and mood.
When asked about they would like to see the genre of show I
aim to make, one of my interviewees said they would like to see a host that is
comfortable and natural in front of the camera, this is because a host that is
comfortable and good in control in front of the camera is easier to watch and
would be more likely to be good at keeping the show running smoothly.
When asked what time my show would be most desired for
viewing both of my participants said they would like to see the show being
advertised for the evening or night hours. This is due to the fact that
majority of my demographic work during the day and has their free time in the
later hours of the day. For this reason
I would be aiming for my live show to be aired around 9pm, this also means the
watershed hours would be met and my show would not require to be as careful
with censorship. I would also give my
show the option of being watched after aired so if missed people can have the
option to go and watch it in their own time.
After looking at this interview I am feeling more confident
with moving on to the production planning for this project. I will start by
making a storyboard and script and move on the work through all paperwork I could
need for the main production due to take place in two weeks. For the set of my
show I will be aiming to make a simple set up with two chairs, simple décor and
something that fit the style of my host and the aesthetic of the genre I am
going for. Along with all this I will not be moving forward with some secondary
research, using secondary research will further prepare me for any planning and
prep I could use whilst designing the main structure for my video.
My research - Secondary
Theories
Here I will be looking at theories I will be applying to my project to help make it as constructive and easy to understand as I can. The theories I will be looking at are Todorov’s theory on the equilibrium of a project and Stuart hall’s theory into semiotics looking how I can help my project appeal to my demographic whilst also not being too offensive to any casual viewers.
Todorov
Theory: The environment begins with a state of equilibrium. E.g.: everything is as it should be in a state of equal balance between powers of any kind. Then it suffers some disruption or disequilibrium. The resolution a new equilibrium is produced.
I will be using his theory when constructing the script and structure for my video as I want the talk between my host and guest to bounce off each other; doing this will ensure my video has a good conversational chat and not just complaining for 8 minutes. Without a structure to the episode, the show could go on forever with no end or conclusion, for this reason I will be giving my host a timer and giving him the job of controlling the conversation, this job will help keep my show in the time limit provided. This show will also help me structure the script of the actual show allowing me to understand when certain segments of the show should be taking place to correctly layout the conversation and keep my video to the point and on target. Using these techniques I think my show has the potential to be well made and easy to follow as there will no waffling and the subjects will be kept to the point.
Stuart Hall
Theory: The Studying of Semiotics. Stuart Hall claimed that media texts go through stages of encoding and decoding. This theory states that the producer encodes media texts and that the texts contain only the ideologies of the people who made the media text.
I have used this theory I my work by taking things into account such as the watershed hours. By this I mean my show could cause controversy by the idea that some of the subjects could be considered offensive or rude in the eyes of the general public. For this reason I will be taking into when this could be shown and give a clear warning in the shows description of the show so that people who are watching have a good understanding on what this show would be about and whether or not thy want to watch it. I will also be taking good consideration into the script and directions for the host and guest. Doing this will ensure that no language is too vulgar or harsh for the audience; words such as the “C” word and “N” word are considered too outrageous for common TV shows, even when shown online. As I want my show to respect it’s viewers and not to be too harsh for the common viewers.
Using what I have learnt here I feel more confident in the construction of my script as I start top plan out and organise the concept I have created. From here I will be looking into other podcasts and multi-camera projects and websites looking to the production of a video such as the one I aim to make. From this I can start to plan filming day and the arrangement of my cameras and the equipment I will need for filming day.
Books
Other than my theory research I have looked into four other
areas of research, one of these areas being books. The two books I have chosen
to look at are “Mastering Multi-Camera Techniques: From Pre-Production to
Editing to Deliverable Masters” and “Television Talk: A History of the TV
Talk Show”. I will now be analysing all I have learnt from these books and
talking about how I will apply this research into my final project.Theories

Books
The first book I looked at was “Mastering Multi-Camera
Techniques: From Pre-Production to Editing to Deliverable Masters”. This
book gave me a lot of tips on how I could mould my work into the deadline and
accurately keep track on how my progress in this project was going. The
techniques showed me some skills in set up and how to cut the cameras without
being too “jumpy” in post-production. I will be mostly applying these skills
when planning my project, however this book did give me good editing advice;
the contents of this book can mostly be applied to my pre-production as I will
be using what I learnt to plan out my camera positioning and lighting plans.

The second book looked at in my research was “Television
Talk: A History of the TV Talk Show”. I will apply this book when writing
my script to make sure my host is enthusiastic and engaging towards the
audience. I will also be giving some of these host tips to my host directly so
he can practice some different character performances to make sure he has his
characters personality ready and prepared for production day due to take place
in a couple of weeks.
Television Talk: A History of the TV Talk Show Link:
Using what I have learnt from these books I will be moving
on to look further into videos to expand on my knowledge of how to run a
multi-camera show. I will also be looking at a podcast to study their camera
and editing techniques the best way to execute the post-production for my final
product.
Videos
Next I will be looking at some videos to gain a further
understanding on multi camera techniques as well as some research looking into
popular podcast shows to gain a deeper understanding on how to run a successful
talk show and how to correctly edit a video in that style without adding too
many jump cuts and making my show simple and easy to watch.Videos
The first video I looked at is a podcast episode by a popular youtuber H3H3 in this podcast he interviews and has a conversation with other popular youtuber, jacksepticeye aka Sean McLoughlin. This will provide me with good creditable research as it gives me some good insight into how a talk show style of live video is done. This is important, as I will be directing my video to be played online on a platform such as YouTube. I have chosen to make this video for a style like that so people can go back and re-watch the video in their own time. Also much like seen in the H3H3 podcast, the setting of online talk shows feels a lot more natural and comfortable to watch than a chat show one would see on TV.
My next video of research was looking at another podcast style of video, however, in this video the presenter is not talking to someone else but in fact the camera. Instead of an interview the presenter is talking to the viewers about how to prepare for an online stream for websites such as Facebook. I will be using this kind of knowledge to try and get some good equipment for my project. He talks about multi-camera work and I will be aiming to use this in my project and planning when looking at my equipment list and planning the main set up positioning I will be using.
Using what I have learnt from all this I will now be moving on to looking at some websites to deepen what other techniques I can be applying to my project. By doing this I will be getting more evidence to support what I have already learnt from my books and video research. If I was not looking further into different platforms of research I would not necessarily be getting the accurate information I need. Therefore, by looking at all these different areas for my research I proof what I have already learnt as a more reliable source of information to learn from.
Websites
To help prove the other areas I have researched for this project I will now be looking at two websites to help confirm what I have investigated over the past few areas. These websites will be looking into multi-camera project techniques and more information looking at how to be a talk show host. These are both things I have looked at previously but by using these websites and news articles that will follow, I can start to prove my research as accurate.
I started by looking at the website that researches on how
to be a talk show host. A lot of what is said here are things that have already
been spoken about in my previous research. As it mentioned the concept of having
good communication skills and being able to control a conversation. This means
asking the questions and being able to end a segment of the show as to not have
it going on for too long. This is important as a lot of shows even online can
have time limits that could cause issues for the editing if the conversation
goes on for too long.

The next website I look at looked further into the understandings
on how to run a multi-camera production. It had given a lot of similar tips as
other areas of research I have investigated during the secondary research
chapter of my work. These tips are very similar to what I have previously
mentioned and have secured me with going on to complete the final stage of my
research. Looking at this website I know that the skills I have viewed in
videos and book are positive and more reliable sources to be used.
"Multi- Camera Techniques" Link: https://stretchinternet.com/four-multi-camera-production-techniques/
With everything I have researched here I can finally move on
to my final channel of research, this would be the news articles area of
research. Although these websites did a positive job at reassuring my previous knowledge,
these news articles are the easiest way of confirming my findings completely,
as these are based on reliable facts, not from one person to a website. As a result,
using what I see in these articles will be my final step into investigating a
preparing to move on to my pre-production and planning. Their main use in my reaesrch however, will be to discover any affects talk shows can have on the genral public as it could be necessry when designing my project to help assure my show stays ethical and respectful to it's viewers.
News
The final channel of research I have used to develop my knowledge
into multi-camera productions are news articles, although like websites this particular
area of research feels more reliable as these articles are most likely a more reliable
source of information written by a journalist and therefore as been properly investigated
as to not be inaccurate piece of information. These articles do not back up my
research as much as the other channels I have looked at but rather, look at how
the talk show style of telly has shaped our culture and is affecting the current
generations. Using what I read on these sites, I can look at how I can make my
show unique and stand out compared to the common late-night talk show.
The first article I found talking about this subject is
titled “How Do Talk Shows Shape Our Culture”. This article does exactly as the
title says and investigates how the common talk show shapes the kind of people
that live in our day to day world. This article talks a lot of politics and how
talk shows can impact peoples own political opinions, for this reason, I will be
writing a script and attempting to leave politics out for as much as I can,
hopefully, completely. Doing this will reduce any controversy that could cause
backlash to the idea that my host or guests could be a threat and trying to
force their own political opinions on the general public watching.
The second article I researched was titled “Are We in an Age
of Too Many Late-Night Talk Shows?” much like the previous article, the titles
speaks the truth as this is exactly what the article then goes to specify, this
article does not only explore the possibility of if there are too many late
night talk shows, but in fact if there is too much TV in general amongst the
younger generations. To help solve this with my own show, I will try to keep
the general running time to only 30 minutes in a full episode, doing so will
mean that I reduce the amount of time people usually watch late night talk
shows (around an hour). Doing this will also corporate in making my show more
ethical and easier for the viewer as they will have to spend less time to watch
my show as well as being able to watch it when they feel so online.

Using what has been researched here I feel very confident
moving on to the paperwork and planning of my final product. Using what I have
learnt not just from here but also from all my channels of primary and
secondary research as well as some stuff featured on the Ideas page of this
blog; have given me all the help and advice I could need to feel confident with
moving on to the preparation for my production day due to happen in just a
couple of weeks’ time.
