Planning
In this section of my blog I will be looking at all my
paperwork and planning I have done to prepare me for my final project. I will
be also be looking at areas of paperwork I decided to leave out of my planning
and why I chose to do so. We start with the treatment where I lay down some of
the basic details for my video that I have used to help design my research and
ideas page, I will also be using it to help write by paperwork to finalise my
idea before production.
Treatment
Author: Kj
Drake
Show Title:
Gag The Dog
Format of show:
Podcast/ Chatshow
Logline: A
chat show where a guest brings on four pet peeves they have and discuss them
with a host and come to a conclusion on which peeve is the worst.
Treatment: My
show will feature a host and guest talking over 2 pet peeves as they decide
which one is more annoying and should be terminated. The host will ask 4
questions about each peeve to attempt to understand why the guest has that
specific peeve.
Visual Elements
Lighting: Natural
Lighting plus dedo light for spot lighting.
Camera Movement: 3 cameras, 1 wide shot of both participants, 1 camera each displaying a
mod shot to focus on as they talk.
Editing: Post-editing,
light editing, nothing dramatic. Maybe title and ending credits to open and
close video.
Setting: Vintage
living room home, set, studio.
Props:
Appropriate props to fit the peeves described by the guest.
Costume: Host, wearing formal
attire to fit the location. Guest, Smart casual, not as formal as the host, but
smart and presentable.
Audio Elements
Soundtrack:
No soundtrack but maybe some music to be used for the opening or ending videos
to introduce or exit the video.
Effects: The
only foley effects that could be used are some fire sound during the end exit
video. Other than that, no sound effects.
Music: No
specific selected music yet.
Rationale: I
have chosen this project as I felt it would be an interesting project to
attempt it is also different from other ideas my peers have. I will be using
this project to work on my planning skills. As I have to do this all in 1 take
I would require very careful planning that goes far in depth about what I aim
to make.
Primary and Secondary
Research
Primary: For my primary
research I will be conducting a survey to confirm my demographic is accurate. I
will also be having a short interview with my demographic asking them about my
show idea to make sure that I aim to make interests them.
Secondary: For my secondary
research I will be investigating 5 channels of research looking into videos,
books, news articles, websites and media theories. I will be looking into the
kind of show I aim to make as well as multi camera research finding out how to most
effectively use the equipment I have.
Requirements and Resources: For this project I will only have a total of 4 people
on my crew. Myself, a camera operator, and 2 presenters for my show. I have
done this due to lack of people who have the time and will to help me out.
Another factor is travel for getting to the location as most people live a distance away. For my equipment for this project I will be using 3x cameras, 3x
tripods, 1 dedo light and 2x shotgun mics. The location will simply be held at
my house as there are no permission rules or access problems.
Constraints and Considerations: I could encounter some problems with space during my
production that I will have to test and plan ahead for production day. I will
also have a minor fear of crew flaking on me and having to cast at last minute.
Budget: As a
rough estimate, for a show such as mine, as a brand new show with a studio
camera set up and crew, for my show, I would be looking at a budget of £2000.
To start my paperwork and planning I write out a treatment for my project. This treatment has noted down all the important details I wanted to include in the making of my video. Although nothing I write in this treatment if final, it is a good way to making my product easier to design by having all the details I need during the research and paperwork written down in notes on a separate document. Ideas may adapt or change during the production and editing to develop my final video to into an end product. In this treatment I go over the basic information, the visual elements, audio element and finally the research I will be conducting (See research page to find out more). In the overview I discuss my basic premise for the show I aim on making and what format it is designed for. Moving on to the visual elements I choose what lighting, camera and setting I want for my video, this information I came to the conclusion with based on what I was told during the research section of this project. In order to decide a lot of the finer details of this project I had to reflect based on what I have learnt during my primary and secondary sectors on my blog. Audio elements include things such as soundtrack and effect sounds. These were chosen based on my actual video idea and what I felt would fit considering the genre of video I aim to make as well as the format I am designing the end product for. If reading this blog in chronological order, viewers may have already seen what I have created in the research sector of my treatment going over what channels I intend on looking into as well as my survey and interview I did to look closer into my demographic using their advice to create the final design for my video.
CPA
Crew List
Underneath my treatment is the CPA and crew list for my project. A CPA is a time plan used in the creation of media related projects. These areas of a project are split up and timed into the weeks of a production to help keep order and timing in place for the creators. In this case, the CPA has helped me keep in my time schedule and without I have no doubts I would be behind in my work and be missing the deadline date. In my CPA there are overlaps in different areas of the project. This is because in a production different areas can overlap, such as designing my treatment whilst writing up my surveys. The use of this chart allowed me to keep track of my planning keeping sure my planning time did not eat too far into my production time leaving me with plenty of time to create my final export by deadline date. Under this is my crew list, for this project I decided the best choice I could make was to keep my crew small. I knew it would not be too difficult that was as the space to film as small and we did not need any camera operators to be moving the cameras during production. In that, my production crew consists of me and 1 other classmate of the course. Togeather we were able to get all the equipment to my house and back safely and use it effectively. For my cast I decided on 2 men for the roles to appeal to the demographic. I thought about including a female cast member to appeal to the male gaze, but due to the subjects to could be spoken about during this show I didn’t want to draw in the wrong kind of audience or offend any potential viewers. For this reason I chose to stick with 2 male cast members that fit the roles as they are too off putting to look at nor are they overly attractive to once again be too appealing to the female gaze and draw in the wrong demographic.

Lewis:
Hello everyone, and welcome to Gag the Dog. Today with us we
have Thomas Whitworth (Introduction Sentence, eg, the 18 your old upcoming
artist known for his controversial views in the subject of animal rights.) On today's episode we will look at 2 pet hates Tom has chosen to bring to us as we
aim to break them down and understand, why the tail wags? (As Lewis introduces himself and guest, credit cards pop up with simple
graphics)
Tom introduces himself, a quick hello, how are you.
Lewis:
So what peeves have you chosen to bring to us today?
Tom introduces peeve 1 and 2
Lewis introduces conversation
First peeve:
- When do you first remember having these feelings?
- How do people usually react when you talk about it?
- How does it make you feel talking about this today?
- How do you try to avoid the problem when it comes up?
Second peeve:
- When do you first remember having these feelings?
- How do people usually react when you talk about it?
- How does it make you feel talking about this today?
- How do you try to avoid the problem when it comes up?
Lewis:
Thank you for that Tom. Now lets look
more in depth with that as we decide which one these you would like to be
terminated and burnt from your life.
Short chat, Tom picks
a peeve
Lewis:
Okay thank you for that tom it’s been a pleasure having you.
Thank you and goodbyes
Lewis:
Well that just about wraps things up for us on this part of
the show, stay tuned for some more tails as our next guest is Courtney Beckett,
an upcoming director having some interesting views into the music industry and
how it’s run, as well as some short interview time with our 2 guests of the
day. Thank you and see you after the break.

My storyboard and script are designed to help me during the main production of my video. Although they both look simple, this layout was needed to keep things easy for me and my crew to understand on production day. This is shown by the fact there is only 1 line of storyboard. As I will not know exactly which camera angle will be on screen at exactly which point, which will change depending on when my host and guest are talking independently or to each other. For this reason, in my storyboard, I have simple shown the 3 angles the cameras will be stood at during filming day. All 3 of my cameras will be stationary during filming and will be switched around during my post. I have also included the graphic I had made for my video. I was able to have a friend design me a graphic card for my project which will be given credit in the opening of my video along with the other opening graphic titles. The script for this project is colour coded where necessary to reassure that I can follow the script. As I wanted the script to be easy to follow and understand, not just for myself but for my crew as well. It may not look like a professional film script but this is what has worked for me to help create the final product I set out to make.
Risk Assessment
Recce Report
Practice Set Up
Next we have the risk assessment and recce report for this production. These are both important parts of documentation for a project such as this as they allow the crew to prepare for anything that could go wrong on production days, whether it be damaging to the crew, cast, equipment or set. The risk assessment looks at any possible damages that can be caused during this project, numbering there likelihood, severity and what can be done to decrease these numbers. Next we look at the recce report, this is a rough sketch of the layout of the area we will be using during production. This also looks at other problems that could occur on filming day such as background noises and lighting problems. I have got plans to help against these causes by bringing lights from the college for filming and assuring there is minimal unwanted background noises during the production of my filming day. Under my recce report, a practice set up can be seen, this does not have all the equipment I used on production day however, it gave me a good idea on how much space the cameras would take up and where the lights would need to be places to get the most out of them that we can. This was something I have never done with previous projects but is something I will be using in future project as I found it useful to have my set up laid out in front of me so I could prepare for any problems that could occur.
Equipment List
Graphic - Thumbnail
Finally
in my paperwork and planning we can see the graphic I had made for my by a
friend for this video. It is a mascot for the show with the title of the show
displayed next to it. I used this name as a play on the phase “Wag the dog”. A phase
used to describe when someone takes something small and blows it out of proportion,
similar to how dogs get excited over small things for no reason. I replaced the
word wag with gag, gag meaning joke or funny, making my graphic card final. I also created my equipment list. Doing this took some
long time and thinking about what equipment I could use that would most benefit
me during the production of my video. For this project I knew I needed 3
cameras to capture all the angles I would need for my project. After careful consideration
I decided to up my lighting from 1 dedo light to 3. This is so I could better
the lighting quality of the video and try to do more to combat the natural lighting
in the shooting room. Finally we decided to get 2 shotgun mics to capture the
best sound quality we could from 2 different angles. Using
everything I have looked at here I feel very prepared and confident moving forward
with the production of my project due to happen this upcoming week. I have
carefully planning out any problems that could occur and chosen as cast and
crew that I think will benefit filming day and my final video ready for me to
edit in a couple of weeks time.
